The word anxiety is derived from the latin anxietas (which means to choke, throttle, trouble and upset) and encompasses behavioural, affective and cognitive responses to anticipated/perceived danger. While fear is an intense emotional state which is activated in response to objective danger. While all of us are afflicted by some level of anxiety in our lives, sometimes anxiety can reach disruptive levels. When fear and apprehension about people, situations or the future lead to significant disruptions in the quality of personal, social or occupational life, anxiety disorders are diagnosed. Although round 25% of the general population suffers from significant anxiety, only a very small proportion of us seek any help.
